Where did my love of photography start? With a trip to the U.K. and Ireland in 1997.
This may look like a random page in the infinite universe of photography webpages; it is actually a meditation “where have I been?” and “where am I going?”. Each one is a unique place, job, or time in my life and, I hope, will spark something in you to dream that “wildly improbable goal” and answer the call to go see what you are yearning to see.

January 2005, Ramallah. During an independent study in undergrad, I spent one month touring, meeting families, and interviewing dentists (it's a long story why the dentist part) across Israel, Jordan, and the West Bank. On this day, we were escorted by resident Quakers to see the celebration of the newly elected Palestinian president.
January 2005, Petra, Jordan. After visiting Petra, seeing huge tombs and villages carved out mountains and complex aqueducts, a tree survives after civilizations have come and gone.
2007, Togo, West Africa: I served as a Peace Corps volunteer from 2006-2008. I lived in a small village called Mama-Kope. This is the village chief with this new granddaughter.
2007, Togo, West Africa: On an AIDS education bike campaign across Togo, ~20 volunteers and Togolese counterparts put on skits at schools and medical centers. This beautiful young woman selling oranges appeared behind us to watch the chaos and I somehow grabbed this candid photo.
2017, Zurich, Switzerland. A combination trip of hiking the Via Alpina and a family reunion. Visiting the small mountain town of my paternal great-great grandparents was like filling in the blank around my obsession with mountains.
Boundary Waters Canoe Area, northern MN, 2009: Lake at dusk.
San Bernardino Mountains, southern CA, 2017: My early days of working for the Forest Service I was flying solo. To fill my time, I hiked the National Forests that it was my job to know intimately. As a Forest Entomologist I needed to know tree species by elevation, soil types, fire regimes, and all the of native and invasive insects that were a threat at a stand and landscape-level. In the fall, the willows turn gold in riparian areas.
2018, San Bernardino Mountains, Southern CA
2021, Three Sisters Wilderness, PCT, central Oregon. Solo backpacking is one of the most transformative practices that I picked up while I lived in CA. It felt so nurturing to give myself this gift of time, away from work, away from cultural and family expectations. I returned home while I hiked--body, mind, and spirit.
2022, Sedona, AZ. Blue...so blue.
2018, San Diego Co. Camping in the desert with my then fiancé. The stars, his form, and shadows in the sand really grabbed me
2022, Rae Lakes Loop, Kings Canyon NP. Another solo hike to see what I needed to see, fueled by "something is waiting for me there". Eye candy at every turn; the granite, the snow fed streams, the trees/flowers, high meadows, and wildlife.
2019, San Bernardino mountains, overlooking the valley. We lived at ~5000ft in southern CA and every night there was something new to look at. This cloud felt like it was a new visitor to the area + expansive.
2018, near Anchorage, AK. Work with the Forest Service brought me all over the country to the most beautiful lands for conferences, speaking, and teaching. The water, light, and snow in Alaska is unreal.
2023, northern WI. Rosy maple moth (Dryocampa rubicunda). Google photos of this moth if you want to die of cuteness. This one was waiting for me outside my hotel after a long day in the woods.
2024, Big Rice Lake, MN. Beginning of a day working on emerald ash borer in northern MN in black ash. Outside temp, -12F.
2025, St. Paul, MN. A cicada molts from nymph to a winged adult.
2025, St. Paul, MN. Bug on flower. Don't ask me what it is. That was my last job ;)
2021, San Bernardino Mountains, CA. This is our fluff when he was a puppy. His name is Porter.
